Top factors contributing to depression among the elderly
Elderly people are vulnerable to becoming depressed for a variety of reasons, some specific to the process of ageing. It’s important for caretakers and depression counselling practitioners to be aware of these factors to better understand how to help.
Difference between sadness and depression
We all feel sad from time to time but it doesn’t mean we’re depressed. Depression differs from sadness in that it doesn't fade with time like sadness does. Feelings of worthlessness, guilt and hopelessness can be all-consuming and pervasive. The loss of pleasure in activities one used to enjoy is also a telltale sign.

Loneliness & Isolation
One in 4 elderly people experience loneliness and isolation which contributes to poorer mental health outcomes that lead to depression. There are a number of reasons older adults become more and more isolated and lonely. It could be due to children having moved out or away; retirement and the lack of daily interaction with co-workers, new health problems that affect mobility or ability to be social; the necessity of isolating due to covid concerns.
Loss
A sense of loss manifests when we can no longer do some things due to physical impediments, or make decisions for ourselves. It also forms when we lose more and more people that we know - family, friends, and acquaintances. These can compound into a sense of loss of purpose.
Depression is treatable, however it’s vitally important that anyone experiencing these feelings is able to talk with someone they trust. Adult depression counselling provides a safe, caring and supportive environment for people dealing with this type of challenge to their mental health.
