The role of emotional awareness in family conflict resolution
An inevitable part of being in a family is conflicting with other members. But if these conflicts get out of hand frequently and start to interfere with the relationship, it is time for parents and caregivers to take action through emotional awareness counselling, or EEFT (Emotion-Focused Therapy).
EEFT is a powerful, evidence-based tool used to facilitate conflict resolution between family members, notably parents and children. It is especially helpful for those struggling with maladaptive behaviours (anxiety, depression, an eating disorder, etc.), and stressful, life event transitions (divorce, significant diagnosis, foster care, etc.)
With the support of a professionally licensed therapist, learn about the role emotions play in conflicts; how to identify your own and others emotions; understand emotional triggers; and how best to respond to them.
Emotion-focused counselling tools
-
Correctly identify emotions
-
Understand emotional triggers
-
Acknowledge & manage emotions
-
Respond constructively
Equip yourself with the knowledge and understanding of the role emotions play in interpersonal interactions, including current emotions as well as those carried forward from past bad experiences.
Learn new skills that will put you in a better position to be emotionally accessible and responsive. Your own emotional awareness skills , gained through emotion-focused counselling, create a safe place for your children or your spouse to express their own emotions and start to heal. Additionally, modeling emotional awareness builds trust and shows other members how to better manage their own emotions and respond in more constructive ways.
EEFT is available for individuals, parents and caregivers, and families. Look for a professional therapist experienced in emotion-focused counselling.
