Counselling for Gifted Individuals in Surrey and Vancouver
One of the areas that I worked in for a number of years is with gifted adolescents, gifted adults, highly sensitive adolescents, children. Some of the areas that they may experience their world or sensitivities is quite different sometimes than the average child or person. I think that maybe there's a lot of misunderstandings, a lot of behaviors that maybe interpreted as mental health issues. They may in fact just be a sensitivity or a malfit between a child and the environment. I like to describe it as some children are or people just experience the world in a bit of a more intense way. They might be amplified in a way that other people might not.
It’s very important to be able to understand their sort of lived experience as different and step into that world with them. One of the most important things is to feel like somebody gets you. I think that's really important for everybody. In that population or people with some of these characteristics or traits or ways of being, they often don’t feel like anybody understands them. They feel very alone, very isolated. When they can feel known or to have some sense of communion or care or connectedness with another person that can be right there with them in their intensity or the depths or their experience, it can make a tremendous difference in the way that they experience themselves, the way that they cope, the way they connect with other people and that sense of isolation and aloneness can be changed.
