Top factors affecting the mental health of Canadians

June 23rd, 2025 | in Mental Health and Well Being

The prevalence of mental health disorders affecting Canadians, including our own Surrey residents, continues to increase. This upward trend was occurring before the additional challenges brought about by the Covid pandemic, which only exacerbated them.

By 40-yrs-of-age, half of the population will have struggled with mental health issues like mood disorders, anxiety, depression and/or substance abuse. Many of those will be young women, indigenous people, and the homeless. In fact, poverty and homelessness are some of the biggest factors for those experiencing persistent mental health issues serious enough to cause distress and impair functioning.

Half of those meeting the diagnostic criteria for a mental health disorder have not had their mental health needs met. Unfortunately there is still a stigma among Canadians around talking about mental health. So it’s led to higher unmet needs for mental health counselling or psychotherapy than for medication. This correlates with the fact that most people are more likely to speak with family, friends and their doctor rather than a licensed mental health therapist.

However, mental health counsellors in Surrey and across the country are in a unique position to help. With specialised skills and training, psychotherapists are in a better position to understand and support the needs of Canadians coping with mental health challenges. Ultimately, the key to preventing mental health disorders from growing into mental health illnesses is finding help in a safe and supportive environment.

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, leaving people more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, mood disorders, substance abuse and other mental health issues. If you or a loved one is struggling, find a knowledgeable, experienced mental health counsellor in Surrey to talk to.
