When to Seek Counselling for Depression
It can be difficult to know when it is time to see a therapist. We all have bad and good days, and deal with daily struggles and tribulations. Sometimes, it can be obvious that help is needed to overcome challenges, but other times, you may feel off, but not be able to figure out why. There are some signs to watch out for, that may indicate a need for depression counselling.
Constant feelings of sadness or anger
If you are constantly feeling sad or angry, but are unsure why, this may be a sign of depression and the need for mental health counselling. While these emotions are normal, and we all feel them from time to time, if they begin to consume and become uncontrollable, or lead to thoughts of worthlessness or even suicidal thoughts, you must reach out for help right away.
A traumatic Event
If you have experienced a traumatic event that you have not dealt with, or experienced the loss of a loved one, you may need support and counselling to overcome this. These events can lead to depression, and the earlier you receive depression treatment, the faster you can learn strategies and healthy ways to cope.
If you find yourself relying on drugs or alcohol to feel better, it may be a sign of depression. If you are unable to cope without substances, or control these behaviors, then mental health counselling should be sought out.
Often, the hardest part of therapy and counselling is reaching out and asking for help. If you are experiencing any of the above signs, or have witnessed a friend or loved one showing these signs, it may be time to seek counselling for depression.
