Signs that Your Adolescent Child May Need Counselling
Most children pass through adolescence into adulthood without major problems or concerns, but this is not true for all. As a parent, it is important to be vigilant and to recognize some of the signs that your adolescent child may need adolescent counseling to help cope with an issue. The signs to watch out for include:
- Loss of Interest in activities
- This may not be for all activities, but the child may begin to show disinterest in some previously enjoyable activities
- Fatigue or Insomnia
- If your child begins to feel more tired and sluggish than before or has trouble sleeping at night
- Social Anxiety
- Not wanting to go out with friends or participate in social activities
There may also be more serious signs to watch out for, including:
- Severe Mood Swings
- Mood swings are characterized by rapid changes in behavior
- Panic Attacks
- This is an abrupt onset of fear that is unfounded. Usually making someone dizzy and short of breath.
- Talks of Suicide or self-harm
- This could be about the idea or actual action. Self-harm includes any cutting, hitting or self-induced trauma.
- Substance Abuse
- While some alcohol and drug experimentation may be too common among adolescents, regular abuse of substances may indicate a serious problem
While one of these signs on its own may not indicate a major problem, they should be taken seriously. If your child shows any of these signs, they may benefit from a child counselor.
How Teens Can Benefit From Counselling
Counselling for teens and adolescents allows parents to feel that their child is not growing up without the guidance they need. But more importantly, teens can find an experienced, educated, and helpful adult who they can trust to listen and give honest, thoughtful advice. Because of the nature of counselling, teens will be sure that they can trust the counsellor to be attentive and helpful without betraying their trust. Meanwhile parents know that counsellors are trained to be responsible guides for their children.
If you are considering counselling for your teen or adolescent, it’s important to introduce the idea as something that they will have a role in deciding, as well. Let them know that it will be a way for them to gain communication tools that will help them to get across the things that they need to communicate to you as their parent. Counselling can help teens to understand their own feelings and give them the opportunity to find out whether what they’re experiencing is normal.
