How counselling can help overcome negative coping behaviours

December 24th, 2023 | in Counselling Information

Negative coping behaviours inhibit personal growth and happiness as well as affect others around you. However these types of destructive patterns aren’t something you just need to accept. Behaviour counselling is designed to help people of all walks and ages wanting to break free of unhealthy habits and ways of thinking so they can work toward making more positive choices.

How counselling helps overcome negative coping behaviours

  • Provides a safe, supportive, non-judgemental environment

  • Can help uncover underlying emotions and causes

  • Helps client understand the triggers, emotions and behaviours

  • Provides a strategy to address issues and replace unhelpful behaviours

  • Helps the client establish new, healthy responses

  • Provides encouragement and continual support throughout the process

  • Supports client through relapses

There are many different reasons why people develop unhealthy behaviours in the first place. This applies to individuals and families, adults and children. Past traumas, experiencing difficult circumstances, and/or living with emotions of frustration, loss, anger, and fear can trigger self-destruction thoughts and actions, addictions and other maladaptive behaviours. These are good reasons to seek behavioural counselling.

Counsellors work with individuals, couples, families and children to work through the underlying reasons for established negative behaviours. They provide a safe and supportive, non-judgemental environment in which participants can relax and feel comfortable opening up. Counsellors then develop strategies that are designed to gradually replace harmful coping mechanisms with helpful ones.

Treatments involve behavioural therapy techniques appropriate for the individual, including forms of play-therapy for children. Additionally, while skilled behavioural counsellors offer guidance from start to finish, optimal outcomes require the active participation of the participants.
