A Closer Look at Emotion-Focused Family Therapy

Surrey family counsellors have a number of different ways to help families. One of those is called Emotion-Focused Family Therapy.
EFFT works with the idea that families play the greatest role in supporting their individual members. This is due to the strong, secure, and authentic bonds that a family, as a whole, represents.
However, past emotional injuries, unresolved fears, and other obstacles build blocks in members’ ability to respond to, and provide support for other members. Typically, responses tend to devolve into arguments, repeat in negative cycles, and create feelings of not being heard or not being listened to.
Family counsellors using EFFT work with families, parents, and individuals, to address underlying emotional responses, particularly in caregivers. By processing and working through their own emotional blocks, parents and other caregivers get the opportunity to create new responses based on emotional accessibility and trust.
EFFT therapists facilitate healing from past hurts within a family and enable the use of new skills to build confidence going forward. These are useful, for instance, in helping loved ones through the symptoms and behaviours of anxiety, depression, or an eating disorder. Or offering support as one navigates stressful life events like divorce, diagnosis of a learning disability, placement into foster care, etc.
To provide support to families, parents, couples, individuals and professionals, Alison Bell therapists offer a number of family counselling workshops in Surrey, one of which is Emotion-Focused Family Therapy. Give us a call to find out when the next is being held, and for more details.
