Is seasonal affective disorder a type of depression?

October 18th, 2022 | in Anxiety and Depression

Seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD, is a type of depression. What makes it different from other types is that it occurs in a seasonal pattern. Symptoms are similar to other types of depression but usually start in the fall or winter and decrease in the spring. (There is also a less common version that starts in spring and lasts through the summer.)

Symptoms of SAD

  • Trouble sleeping, or sleeping too much

  • Low mood, low self-esteem

  • Eating more, particularly carbohydrates, weight gain

  • Loss of pleasure in everyday activities

  • Lack of energy

  • Heightened irritability and/or anxiety

  • Withdrawing physically and socially

  • Feeling guilt, hopelessness, worthlessness or empty

Symptoms of SAD vary from person to person and range from mild to severe. It’s not known what causes SAD–lack of light is one theory. But it is thought to run in families. Fortunately, SAD is treatable. At any point, if symptoms start to affect an individual’s ability to cope or function, then depression therapy may help.

Depression therapy is one of the effective ways used to treat SAD. Using CBT (cognitive-behavioural therapy), a person learns skills that help reform the way they think and behave. Unhelpful patterns of thoughts, behaviours, beliefs and ideas are replaced with healthier habits that lead to better mental health.

In Surrey, depression counselling is available to help people experiencing this challenge to their mental health. If you, or someone you know experiences seasonal changes in mood, thoughts, and behaviour at regular, specific times each year, reach out for help. SAD is a treatable condition and depression therapy can help you feel better.
