Karen Janssen is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, with decades of dedicated experience in counselling and education. With a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Psychology, Karen has established a strong foundation in both academic and practical aspects of mental health support.
Known for her empathy, compassion, and dedication, Karen has a proven track record of building strong, trusting relationships with her clients. She utilizes a variety of counselling approaches, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Interventions, to address a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidality, as well as relational, social, learning, and behavioural challenges. Her trauma-informed approach is particularly effective in helping clients navigate their unique personal challenges and experiences.
Karen has a special interest in Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, having completed training specifically for school counsellors. She has successfully integrated these strategies into her practice, witnessing the transformative power of emotions in resolving conflicts and fostering positive change in students and their families. Her commitment to professional development is unwavering, and she continuously seeks opportunities to expand her expertise, including her interest in working with couples facing relational struggles. She works with children, teens, families, individuals, and couples exploring the strengths of the system and areas that would benefit from further compassion, growth and change.
Karen’s approach is characterized by her warmth, empathy, and a touch of humor, which helps create a safe and comfortable environment for her clients. She places a high value on the role of parents in the therapeutic process, guiding them to support their children effectively and fostering stronger family connections.
