Even if a relationship has been deemed irreconcilable, there are still reasons to consider family counselling. During a separation or divorce, tensions and emotions are high, making it especially hard to make rational decisions and to think about what will be best in the long term. And if there are children involved, family counselling can help them to understand what’s going on and how they can deal with the changing circumstances of their lives. Family counselling is not only helpful when a couple is trying to reconcile, it can also be a tool for a peaceful separation and to help everyone to move forward.

Family Counselling for Couples Preparing for Divorce

We see a lot of dramatic examples of divorce on TV in and in movies. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Many couples simply decide that they no longer want to or can work together to maintain their relationship. They may have realized that they started moving apart a long time ago, and that the separation is the culmination of years of dissatisfaction. But divorce does tend to bring out the worst in people, especially as everyone is emotional and misunderstandings can quickly turn into drama. Family counselling can help you to maintain a sober and rational outlook as well as ensure that emotions are communicated in a way that allows everyone to move on.

Counselling for Kids Whose Parents are Separating

Of course, children add another layer to this difficult process. Many children fear that they didn’t do enough or that they are the cause of their parents’ split. With family counselling, you can demonstrate to your children that this decision is in no way their fault and that there’s nothing more to be done.

Counselling can be a forum where grievances are aired and important communication happens in a safe and neutral space. Consider family counselling as you work through this big change.
